Christmas – the season of good will. Typically, known as ‘the season of descending family and friends’ in my home due to extended family visiting for (somewhat extended) periods of time!
If like me, you like to make a little bit of extra effort with your guest rooms come party season, here are a few festive fix-me-ups for your spare room to wow your overnight visitors.
First of all, make it easy on yourself. You can do this one in a flash. Choose a reed diffuser or scented candle in Christmas spices, clementine or even douglas fir. There are plenty available and most companies bring out a special Christmas fragrance to tempt you. This raises the question – whatever happened to pot-pourri? (Is that even a thing anymore?)
Early evening darkness means rubbish light for fixing party make-up. Balance this essential requirement with a soft glow form lamps to make a cheerful and inviting room that is still practical for getting jobs done.
If family members are bunking with you for an extended period then storage is going to be your best friend. Not only for clothing and personal effects but after the wrapping paper has been torn off, where are they going to put all those amazing gifts? Seems like the Alderney Ottoman Bed is just the ticket. It has acres of space inside for anything and everything helping to keep your room peaceful and uncluttered.
A ‘comfort basket’.
Simply a small basket of essentials that your guests can help themselves to. This might include a hangover elixir or two, plasters for party blisters, a small sewing kit and miniature toiletries.
Another quick and easy achievement … adding a few scatter cushions to your guest bed. This is a cheap and easy way to temporarily update your décor for the season. Perhaps opt for one (non-cheesy) seasonal themed scatter cushion amongst some rich velvet ones for a variety of textures and handle. We like Marbled Velvet Bordeaux and Wool Plaid Original and Faux Wool Ruby for a festive vibe. Select free fabric samples here.
Change your headboard cover.
Opt for a seasonal headboard change with a sneaky lesser known ulterior motive. Having a second cover for your headboard for use over the Christmas period, will free up your usual resident for laundry. Chances are, as it is black tie season, you’ll be nipping down to your dry cleaners anyway. Therefore, It’s a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Thank me later! Choose a Harris or Caldey Headboard for a removable cover option.
Throws and blankets.
For instant colour and snuggly nights, provide your guests with the option of an extra blanket draped across the bed or, maybe, the bedroom chair. These can be stored away in a stylish Ottoman when not in use – oh, and futhermore, your ottoman also doubles up as a bedroom seat. A versatile piece of furniture. Bonus.
Simple but often overlooked. When it comes to party season, where’s a girl to put that long frock? Therefore, be sure to stock your guest room wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers to keep smart threads looking dapper.
A very personal touch.
Similarly, in the spirit of giving, leave a small handmade Christmas decoration for your guest as a momento. You might even start another family tradition!
The whole hog.
Finally, if you really want to go to town, then add a full trimmed tree into your guest room for the ultimate in luxury. It would certainly be a lovely touch when the children run into mum and dad’s room with their loot from Santa on Christmas morning?
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
