B

Back Tacked Edge 

Border

 

This is the part of the headboard where the border meets the face, and a backtacked edge means that there is no piping. Please click here for more information.

C

Central Panel

Featured on a panel with a separate border, the central panel sits in the middle of the headboard. Model Example: Bryher. 

COM

Abbr. Customer’s Own Material

Contrast Buttoned

Shallow or Deep Buttons that are covered in a different fabric to the main headboard/bed/Ottoman/Chair

Contrast Piped 

Piping made from a different colour of fabric to the main material.

CRIB5

Level of fire retardancy required for items being used in a commercial setting, ie: Hotel.

Crystals

Swarovski Crystals are used in place of covered shallow or deep buttons.

Cut-Out

An upholstered space in a headboard left blank for sockets, switches, light fittings etc.

 

D

Deep Buttoned

Diamond shaped cushioned effect made by pleating and buttoning into deep foam. Sometimes referred to as tufting, quilting or chesterfield style.  Model examples: Iona, Easdale, Tean.

Design Change

Adding or subtracting a design feature to an existing model without changing the silhouette or dimensions, ie, adding a border to a borderless design.

Design To Floor

Applies to a floor standing headboard.  The central design runs behind the mattress to the floor. Design is usually hidden by the mattress.

Design to Mattress 

Applies to floor standing headboards.  The central design of the headboard stops at the top of the mattress and is flat/plain behind the mattress to the floor. Ideal to save fabric.

Divan

A rectangular upholstered bed base on glides. Box shaped with or without storage drawers.

E

East/West split

A divan bed base that is split into two parts horizontally from left to right.

Edge

The forward facing front most corner of the perimeter of the headboard/bed head end.

F

Fabric Protector

A water based solution for stain guarding your fabric.  Does not change the feel, look, smell or texture of your headboard/bed.

Face

The forward facing front of the headboard/bed head end.

Fire Retardant Interliner

A fire resistant barrier cloth required by law to make sure that COM which is over 75% natural fibres and not inherently fire retardant complies with legislation.

Fire Retardant Treatment

Chemical back coating of COM which is under 75% natural fibres and not inherently fire retardant in order to make it comply with fire regulations.

Flange

Protruding flat edge attached along a length of cord or piping for installation into a seam.

Floor Standing

1 – Modified Headboard that sits on the floor instead of the mattress. 

2 – Head end of an upholstered bed that rests on the floor.  Freestanding.

Flush Top Platform

This is an option on our Guernsey Bed Base where the platform that the mattress is set on is not recessed.  This provides a reduction in width and length to our inset Guernsey Bed Base.

FR

Abbr. Fire Retardancy.

H

Half Drop Pattern Repeat

A vertical pattern repeat that is staggered across the fabric width, often giving an off centre central motif.

I

Individual Nail

A single metal stud used for upholstery embellishment.

Inherently Fire Retardant

Natural fibre material that does not ignite/smoulder ie, virgin wool.  Requires no additional FR treatment.

Inset Border

The headboard and border are split into two panels and can be upholstered in differing fabrics.

You can specify any width of border that you like.

Inset Braid and Nails

The headboard face is embellished with a row of 15mm braid that follows the outline of the headboard shape.  This braid is fixed using individual 11mm nails at equal intervals.

Inset Piped Border

The headboard and border are split into two panels and a line of self or contrast piping is set between them in the join.

Inset Platform

A recessed mattress platform on our Guernsey Bed and our fully upholstered beds.  The mattress is sunken into the bed frame by 5cm.

K

Kick Pleat

An inverted pleat used at the corner of our valances and our Lossie Chair to allow freedom of movement.  Our kick pleats are ‘faux’ allowing the sides of the valance to be lifted to access the drawers. The pleat reveal can be made in a contrast fabric.

L

Linear Piping

Ready made piping available to buy by the metre, with a flange.

Lining Cloth

An inexpensive, durable and high quality cloth used to panel unseen areas ie, the centre of a bed valance, the back of the headboard. Available in Black and Natural.

M

Mattress Height

The combined height of your bed base and mattress from the floor.

N

North/South Split

A divan bed base splt into two manageable pieces, splot along the length from head end to foot end.  Ideal for a zip and link arrangement.

O

Outside Border Return

The side of the headboard is covered in a contrast fabric which wraps around the headboard face to create a thin contrast border onto which 19mm individual spaced nails are applied.

P

Pattern Repeat

The height of the pattern on a printed fabric.

Pillowstop

Aesthetically pleasing upholstered 20cm high panel that is integrated into your headboard.  The pillowstop sits behind the mattress to tidy up the struts from the side view.

Piping

The side of the headboard is covered in a contrast fabric which wraps around the headboard face to create a thin contrast border onto which 19mm individual spaced nails are applied.

Platform

The solid area that your mattress rests on top of.

Pleat

A folded and creased piece of fabric which adds texture.  Model example: Tresco.

Plywood Moulded Struts

Fully adjustable in two places, plywood moulded struts are used to secure your headboard to your bed base.

Pocket Spring

The mattress springs are inserted into individual fabric pockets that act independently of each other for a comfortable nights rest.

Pulls

Strong thread is passed from through your headboard and tensioned to create a subtle ‘dip’.  Model example: Islay.

R

Railroaded

The fabric is turned through 90 degrees so that it can be run without joins on wider models. 

Rails

The sides of our upholstered beds.

S

Self Buttoned

Buttons are covered in the same fabric as the main headboard.

Shallow Buttoned

Shallow buttons are impressed into the headboard suface and pulled slightly to create a small buttoned depression.

Skirting Board Cut Out

A bespoke size rebate in the back of a floor standing headboard to give a back to the wall finish.

Specific Fabric Placement

An indication to our workshop that a mixture of fabrics need to be placed in specific positions.

Split-to-Fit

The head ends of our upholstered beds can be split horizontally below the mattress line to reduce the size for access.  The beds are then built in situ with strong re-inforced steel bars to resume the ‘all in one’ look of the bed.

Strip Nail

A continuous nailed effect where the edges of the studs touch in a line. 

Studs

Upholstery nails in various sizes.

T

Tension

The firmness of a mattress surface.

Trundle

Removable underbed storage or secondary bed platform.

W

Wall Mounting Pack

Split batten system made in MDF for securing your headboard to the wall for a flush to wall finish.

Wall Retaining Bracket

Wall mounted fixings for a floor standing headboard to provide stability and safety.

Z

Zip & Link

A super king bed that splits in two to provide occasional twin single beds.
