Fabric Suitability

This trade article is all about fabric suitability, codes and what to/what not to send us.

dAll Fabrics sent to us should be at least 130cm wide.

All fabrics must be accompanied by your order number as a reference when sending them to the workshop.

Linens and cottons:

Linens and cottons are very suitable.  Please refer to our fire retardancy advice.

Plain Velvet:

Consideration should be given to the direction of the pile of a plain velvet.  We will usually run the velvet from right to left on the headboard rather than off the roll to avoid joins.  This may subtly alter the colour of the material.  Care should be taken when specifying a plain velvet and should be sampled in the direction of use.

Some plain velvets show signs of compression from packing and shipping.  To avoid or lesen this, we advise that there is no delay in accepting your delivery once your order is finished, therefore minimising the potential storage time.

Always send velvet on the roll, do not fold.

Satins and Silks:

We do not recommend the use of silk on our headboards as it is usually too fragile for upholstery.

Printed Velvets:

Please note: If velvet is printed on a light coloured base cloth, a white margin may be visible at the pattern matching join where the pile is separated.

Crewels and embroideries:

Most are suitable. The hand finished nature of the embellishment may result in an uneven pattern match.  Great care and skill is applied to our pattern matching but is not always perfect on this type of fabric due to natural variations in the designs and positioning.

Sheer and thin fabrics:

Cotton fabric is the lightest material we recommend.  If you are unsure about the thickness of your fabric, please send us a sample for comment.

Headboards with mitred corners:

Please note that due to the nature of the fabric, the borders of the following headboards are not suitable for mitred joins using checks, stripes or a pattern that will need to match.  Instead of mitred corners, we can cut your border in one piece.  This will significantly increase the amount of fabric we will need.  Please contact us for more information.
