The answer is up to you.
For many years, the industry standard for manufacturing upholstered headboards and beds has been to use high-quality foam fillings. This is because they are supportive, consistent and durable. Natural fillings are a premium alternative chosen by customers looking for breathable, lower-synthetic materials and a more traditional form of construction.
Neither is inherently better. The right choice depends on what matters most to you.
Man-made fillings such as high-density foam and dacron (wadding) are engineered for comfort, durability and represent excellent value for money.
Natural fillings are worth considering if you prefer a lower synthetic quality. When you select natural fillings for your headboard or bed with us, the modern layers of foam and dacron are replaced by horse hair matting, a latex based foam sheet and topped with 100% wool.
Look and feel wise they are both very similar on the finished headboard from the outside.
At The Headboard Workshop, we’ve upholstered thousands of bespoke headboards. Most customers continue to choose our engineered foam construction because it provides consistent comfort and support. Increasingly, however, we’re seeing customers request natural fillings because they want to reduce synthetic materials within their homes.

Myth: Natural fillings are always more comfortable.
Reality: Not necessarily – The softness of a headboard is determined by the layers used in conjunction with one another. It depends on the combination of materials used, their density, how they’re layered and how tightly they are upholstered
Myth: Foam is poor quality.
Reality: High density foam is used by premium furniture manufacturers throughout the industry. It’s been rigorously designed, engineered and tested specifically to do its job well.
Myth: Natural fillings last a lifetime.
Reality: They are durable, but they’re not maintenance-free. Traditional upholstery meaterials such as horsehair and wool have been used for centuries. However, like all upholstery fillings they change with use over time. Longevity depends on the original quality of the materials far more than their ‘type’.
Myth: You can tell whether a headboard has natural fillings by looking at it.
Reality: You can’t.
Once upholstered, a headboard with natural fillings versus one made form modern fillings such as foam will look virtually identical. An experienced upholsterer (such as our team) might be able to ‘feel’ a subtle difference but not even they would know by eye alone.
Myth: Natural fillings are just a marketing trend.
Reality: They are rooted in tradition.
Long before modern foam existed, upholsterers relied on natural materials. Today’s renewed interest reflects a growing preference for lower synthetic content rather than a new invention. In some respects, it’s coming full circle.
Choosing a headboard isn’t simply about how it looks, it’s about how it’s made.
